Cleveland-Based Flamenco Artist Named Finalist in Prestigious International Flamenco Competition
Cleveland, OH — September 18, 2025 — Alice Blumenfeld, Executive and Artistic Director of Abrepaso Flamenco, has been named a finalist in the Professional (Escenario) Level of Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s Flamenco Certamen USA, an international dance competition.
The Flamenco Certamen USA is the only competition of its kind outside Spain, providing a platform for rising and established flamenco dancers to showcase their artistry on an international stage. Being named a finalist is a significant achievement, recognizing Blumenfeld’s exceptional skill, creativity, and leadership within the flamenco community.
While Blumenfeld has earned national recognition—including a Fulbright Grant to Spain, two Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards for choreography, and tours with top U.S. flamenco companies—her work is deeply rooted in Cleveland. Through Abrepaso Flamenco, the nonprofit she founded in 2016, Blumenfeld has created performances, classes, school programs, and community workshops that bring flamenco to audiences of all ages and backgrounds in Northeast Ohio.
“This recognition is an honor not only for me but for our Cleveland community,” said Blumenfeld. “Flamenco is about dignity, resilience, and connection—and I am proud to be carrying forward that spirit here in Cleveland while also representing our city on an international stage.”
Blumenfeld’s nomination highlights the growing role of Cleveland as a hub for innovative flamenco in the U.S. Her company’s work includes original evening-length productions, tablao performances, and collaborative projects that blend flamenco with contemporary dance, literature, and world music.
The final round of Flamenco Certamen USA will take place in New York City this fall, where Blumenfeld will perform before an international panel of judges.
